BEng (Hons)Computer Networking and Cloud Security

BEng (Hons)Computer Networking and Cloud Security
@ ESOFT Metro Campus

Programme overview

This undergraduate engineering pathway leads to a BEng (Hons) Computer Networking and Cloud Security award from London Metropolitan University and focuses on practical network engineering, cloud technologies and cyber security operations. The programme blends core networking, security practices and system design with vocational learning to prepare students for technical careers in IT and security operations.

What you will study

  • Communications Engineering to establish foundational concepts in data transmission and networking.
  • Computer Hardware and Software Architecture, building technical understanding of system components.
  • Electronics Systems covering essential electronic principles supporting network devices.
  • Networking Concepts (CCNA 1 and 2) introducing practical routing, switching and TCP/IP fundamentals.
  • Mobile Communications Systems to explore networks for mobile and wireless domains.
  • Microprocessors and Embedded Systems focusing on processor architecture and embedded design.
  • Network Operating Systems and Enterprise Network and Security to develop secure network management skills.
  • Work Related Learning integrating real-world lab or workplace exposure.
  • Network Security 1 and Network Security 2 (Cisco) applying hands-on security practices.
  • Next Gen Firewalls for Network and Cloud Security (Palo Alto) concentrating on advanced firewall configuration.
  • Cyber Security Operations (CCNA Cisco Cyber Ops) preparing students for operational security tasks.
  • Wireless Networks (Cisco), Ethical Hacking and IoT Systems and Security to broaden cyber security expertise.
  • Capstone Project to demonstrate integrated skills, research and problem-solving capability.

Learning outcomes

  • Apply practical network design and configuration skills aligned with industry standards.
  • Secure systems and infrastructure against hardware, software and network vulnerabilities.
  • Implement cloud-centric security measures and next-generation firewall technologies.
  • Develop competence in cyber security operations and ethical hacking techniques.
  • Analyse emerging security threats and apply mitigation strategies within network environments.
  • Complete a substantial project demonstrating technical autonomy and integration of theoretical and practical learning.

Accreditation and industry recognition

The programme integrates vocational training through the Cisco Networking Academy and Palo Alto Networks regional academy with recognised professional toolsets embedded into the curriculum to support industry certification pathways.

Entry requirements

  • Applicants should meet the University standard undergraduate entry criteria, typically a minimum of grades CCD at A level or 88 UCAS points from an equivalent Level 3 qualification.
  • GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade C/4 or above (or recognised equivalent).
  • Accreditation of Prior Learning or foundation-year routes may be available for those who need to meet entry standards.

Study structure

The degree is delivered over three years full-time with a mix of lectures, laboratory sessions and structured project work. Students engage with both theoretical foundations and practical labs reflecting professional practice.

Teaching and assessment

Assessment combines coursework reports, practical lab tasks, case studies, individual and group research assignments, written exams and the final engineering project to ensure comprehensive evaluation of knowledge and skills.

Career outcomes

  • Network design and cloud infrastructure specialist roles.
  • Security operations and cyber defence positions.
  • Network and cloud security engineer or administrator.
  • Opportunity for progression to postgraduate study or professional certification.

Professional development

Students benefit from vendor-aligned training that enhances employability and prepares graduates for recognised industry certifications alongside the academic degree qualification.
