BEng (Hons) Computer Systems Engineering and Robotics

BEng (Hons) Computer Systems Engineering and Robotics
@ ESOFT Metro Campus

Overview

This programme - BEng (Hons) Computer Systems Engineering and Robotics - prepares students for careers in autonomous and intelligent systems by emphasising microprocessor and microcontroller-based design, embedded programming and applied robotics.

Awards and accreditation

  • Award - BEng (Hons) Computer Systems Engineering and Robotics.
  • Accreditation - Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET).

What you will learn

Develop practical design and programming skills for hardware-software systems - including embedded systems, digital electronics, robotics and networked systems - with a focus on laboratory practice and real-world problem solving.

Study mode and structure

The standard route is a three-year full-time honours degree - with an optional foundation year pathway for students needing preparatory study; modules combine lectures, seminars and significant laboratory work.

Year 1 - core foundations

  • Computer Hardware and Software Architectures - fundamentals of system design and configuration.
  • Electronics Systems - practical electronic design and circuit work in specialist labs.
  • Logic and Mathematical Techniques - essential mathematics and formal reasoning for engineering.
  • Programming - structured software development and problem solving.

Year 2 - applied systems and industry experience

  • Advanced Electronics Systems - deeper electronics and systems integration.
  • Microprocessors & Embedded Systems - architecture, programming and hardware interfacing.
  • Network Operating Systems and Network Engineering - practical networking and administration topics.
  • Databases - design and implementation of data systems.
  • Work Related Learning - placement-style projects to develop employability and teamwork.
  • Optional specialist programming or network options to tailor technical skills.

Year 3 - specialism and project

  • Applied Robotics and Computer Vision - perception, control and robot programming.
  • Digital Systems Applications and IoT Systems and Security - embedded applications for connected devices.
  • Project - an extended independent engineering project demonstrating design, testing and documentation skills.
  • Optional topics - Distributed, Cloud and IoT Systems; Ethical Hacking; Mobile Applications; Network Security (CISCO); Wireless Networks; Broadband Systems.

Entry requirements

Typical entry criteria reflect University standards - examples include A level passes (or minimum 32 UCAS points) and GCSE/Grade C or grade 4 in English Language and Mathematics; foundation-year routes available where needed.

Teaching and assessment

Assessment uses a mix of laboratory reports, coursework, exams and the final-year project - teaching emphasises hands-on laboratory sessions in electronics, embedded systems and communications facilities.

Career outcomes

Graduates are prepared for roles as embedded systems engineers, robotics developers, hardware designers, network and IoT specialists, or for further study in advanced computing and engineering disciplines.

Key benefits for students

  • Strong practical focus - frequent lab work in specialised facilities for electronics, embedded systems and CAD.
  • Industry-aligned curriculum - options in networking, security and distributed systems to meet employer needs.
  • Work Related Learning - applied projects and placement-style experience to build professional skills.
  • IET accreditation - confirms alignment with recognised engineering standards and enhances graduate recognition.
