MSc in Environmental Science - Master of Science in Environmental Sciences

This two-academic-year programme - aligned with SLQF Levels 9 and 10 - comprises 60 credits equally divided between Level 9 and Level 10 courses.

Programme overview

The programme is interdisciplinary - drawing on the Faculties of Natural Sciences, Engineering Technology, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Education - to address environmental management and sustainability.

Aims of the programme

  • Provide thorough academic knowledge about the components of the environment and their interactions.
  • Develop understanding of the scientific principles that underpin environmental management.
  • Explain economic, social, political and legal frameworks relevant to environmental decision-making.
  • Provide training in practical, investigative, research and generic skills sought by employers.

  • Environmental Economics and Management - DSP9502.
  • Environmental Pollution - BYP9503.
  • Environment, Society and Development - MHP9504.
  • Understanding the Environment - ZYP9505.
  • Environmental Policy Planning and Assessment - ZYP9506.

Programme structure - Year 2 (30 credits)

Students complete a 15-credit Research Project - NEPAF01 - plus three elective courses totalling 15 credits.

Admission requirements

Applicants must hold a recognised bachelor's degree of at least 90 credits at SLQF Level 5 - or an equivalent qualification accepted by the Senate of the OUSL - to be eligible for admission.

Learning outcomes and skills

  • Ability to apply scientific principles to practical environmental management problems.
  • Competence in research design - data collection - analysis and reporting through the Research Project.
  • Understanding of policy - legal and economic frameworks that shape environmental interventions.
  • Practical skills from laboratory sessions - field studies and applied investigations relevant to employers.

Study mode and teaching approach

The programme offers flexible learning - including part-time and open distance learning options - combining theoretical courses with laboratory work - field studies and factory visits.
