BSc (Hons) in Psychology (UK) + Diploma of Higher Education in Counseling (SL)

BSc (Hons) in Psychology (UK) + Diploma of Higher Education in Counseling (SL)
@ CIRP - Colombo Institute of Research & Psychology

Dual Qualifications
Dual qualifications are an excellent way of obtaining an academic qualification and a practitioner oriented qualification during the period of your first degree.

Most recognized and the acceptable form of Bachelor’s degree in Psychology is the BSc (Hons) Psychology. Most of the top universities around the world as well as the accreditations and professional bodies require a student have a BSc (Hons) in Psychology that covers all the core subjects. Though few universities offer combined Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology, students sometimes face difficulties in further studies and obtaining membership of professional bodies. Therefore anyone planning to go to any field of psychology should complete their BSc first.

However this limits students from studying applied areas such as Counseling, Child, Business, Forensic, Criminal and Sports psychology. In most degrees these topics are restricted to a short elective module in the final year. This reduces their employability upon completing the first degree. Most students only are able to explore these areas as a part of their postgraduate studies.

Dual Qualifications and Improved Employability
In a rapidly developing world, most students are keen on deciding their career paths early in their higher education. Dual qualification in Psychology and counseling provides this opportunity in an excellent manner. While completing all the core modules required to progress in to the BSc (Hons) in Psychology, students  will take four (04) additional modules worth 60 credits in counseling.

This improves employability of the student as they end up gaining knowledge and skills in counseling. Graduates are able to obtain employment opportunities at starting levels in counseling soon after completion and go on to follow higher qualifications in counseling while they are employed.

Students obtain two qualifications that look impressive on their CV and open up opportunities in a wider range of careers.
