B.Sc. in Oceanography (Honors)

B.Sc. in Oceanography (Honors)
@ Ocean University of Sri Lanka

Offered by the Ocean University of Sri Lanka (OCUSL), this four-year full-time degree equips students with rigorous scientific and practical skills to understand, monitor, and manage the world's ocean systems.

Oceanography is interdisciplinary by nature, drawing on biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, earth sciences, and environmental system science. This programme brings those disciplines together in one coherent, career-focused course.

Award: Bachelor of Science

Duration: 4 Years

Study Mode: Full Time

Language of Instruction: English

Minimum Credits to Graduate: 126 credits

What You Will Study

The programme covers a broad and socially relevant range of topics, including ocean-atmosphere interactions, ocean dynamics (waves, tides, and currents), marine ecosystems, ocean energy, sea level changes, natural climate variability, global warming, ocean acidification, and ocean-based disasters.

Core Skills Developed

  • Oceanographic and hydrographic surveying
  • Data management and programming skills
  • Practical experience in analytical techniques
  • Big data analysis and independent research skills
  • Seamanship and navigation

Entry Requirements

  • Applicants must have passed the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination with minimum passes in the physical and biological science stream at a single attempt.
  • Applicants who sat for G.C.E. Advanced Level within three attempts at the immediate previous year are eligible to apply.
  • Selection is based on highest Z-scores; shortlisted candidates will be required to attend an interview.

Programme Structure - Year by Year

Year 1 builds foundation knowledge in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, geology of the ocean environment, computer science, and geoinformation science. Students gain field and laboratory skills and participate in a year-end field visit by seagoing vessel.

Year 2 advances into deeper topics such as geophysical fluid dynamics, geophysics, atmospheric science, hydrography, climate change, ocean-based disasters, statistical techniques, and law of the sea and marine policy.

Year 3 covers advanced topics including ocean dynamics, analytical techniques, and ocean status forecasting. Students work with ocean observations data management and analysis, complete an internship, and produce a research dissertation.

Year 4 provides advanced practical knowledge in oceanographic surveying, ocean modelling, ocean energy, and coastal engineering applications. The programme concludes with the submission of a research dissertation.
