NDT in Polymer & Chemical Engineering Technology

NDT in Polymer & Chemical Engineering Technology
@ Institute of Technology University of Moratuwa - ITUM

Division of Polymer and Chemical

The Division of Polymer and Chemical focuses on two distinct National Diploma programmes - Polymer Technology and Chemical Engineering Technology - taught within a practice-orientated curriculum.

Each programme combines classroom theory with applied laboratory experience and industry exposure - the structure supports technical competence and workplace readiness for manufacturing and testing roles.

Programmes and Structure

  • Polymer Technology - a course emphasising polymer science, processing, testing and material behaviour; students engage in laboratory work and applied projects.
  • Chemical Engineering Technology - a course covering process operations, unit operations and process control fundamentals; classroom theory is balanced with practical exercises.
  • Programme length - both courses consist of two years of academic work and one year of industrial training - a structured pathway from campus learning to industry placement.

Laboratories and Technical Facilities

The division maintains specialised laboratory facilities that support teaching, research and industry testing - these spaces underpin practical learning and real-world problem solving.

  • Material Characterization - facilities for analysing physical and chemical properties of materials.
  • Environmental Engineering - testing and measurement relevant to environmental compliance and process impacts.
  • Energy Engineering - experimental setups related to energy systems and efficiency studies.
  • Industrial Chemistry - analytical chemistry capabilities for process and quality control.
  • Polymer Testing - mechanical and chemical testing specific to polymer products and raw materials.
  • Unit Operation - practical rigs and demonstrations for core chemical engineering unit operations.
  • Process Control - instrumentation and control systems used to teach automation and system stability.
  • Polymer Science - lab resources supporting polymer synthesis and characterisation.
  • Dry Rubber Technology - specialised testing for rubber products and compounding.
  • Plastic Technology - processing trials and evaluation for thermoplastics and thermosets.
  • Latex Technology - practical work focused on latex-based products and processing techniques.

Industry Engagement and Services

The division actively supports industry through testing, consultancy and collaborative projects - students participate in problem-solving tasks that address manufacturing and quality issues.

  • Outside Sample Testing - analytical services offered to local industry for product verification and quality assurance.
  • Short Courses - targeted training modules designed to upskill personnel in specific technologies and laboratory techniques.
  • Consultancy - applied problem solving and technical advice provided to manufacturing partners and stakeholders.
  • Student-supported Projects - industry-relevant projects carried out with student involvement to strengthen industry-institute relationships.

Teaching Approach and Student Experience

Instruction blends theoretical modules with extensive laboratory practice - assessment emphasises competence in testing, process understanding and practical troubleshooting.

Industrial training is integral - the compulsory industrial placement fosters professional skills, workplace communication and applied technical experience in live production settings.

Graduate Capabilities

Graduates develop practical skills in material testing, process operations and laboratory analysis - they are prepared for roles in manufacturing, quality control and technical support within polymer and chemical industries.

The division's focus on industry collaboration ensures that students gain experience solving real manufacturing challenges - enhancing employability and technical confidence.

Admissions and Factual Notes

The division conducts the National Diploma in Technology courses mentioned above - specific entry requirements, awards and accreditation details are presented on formal programme documentation and are not reproduced here.
