NDT in Civil Engineering Technology
@ Institute of Technology University of Moratuwa - ITUM

Division of Civil Engineering Technology

The Division of Civil Engineering Technology at ITUM is one of the largest divisions - the division facilitates an intake of 200 students per intake. The division aims to produce qualified professionals for the civil engineering industry.

Programme overview

The NDT program for Civil Engineering Technology delivers academic activities at ITUM in the first two years - Semester 1 - 4 - and workplace-focused Industrial Training in the final year - Semester 5 - 6.

What the programme covers

  • Principles, theory and design across core civil engineering areas - Structures, Hydraulics and Soil mechanics.
  • Water resources, surveying and management - practical and theoretical components are integrated.
  • A residential Survey Camp of two-week duration is conducted at an outside location to develop field surveying competence.
  • Industrial Training in Semesters 5 - 6 provides hands-on experience in real-world civil engineering environments.

Learning environment and facilities

  • The division maintains modern infrastructure including six laboratories and a dedicated drawing room for practical learning.
  • Teaching infrastructure also includes two tutorial classes, two large lecture halls and a workshop for applied skills development.
  • A qualified lecture panel delivers blended theoretical and practical learning to prepare students for industry roles.

Industry relevance and career pathways

The civil engineering industry covers construction and maintenance of buildings, bridges, roads and railways, dams and reservoirs, water supply and waste disposal schemes, irrigation schemes, tunnels and power houses, runways, airports, harbours and coastal structures.

Further education routes

  • B.Tech. Degree of the Open University of Sri Lanka - a recognised progression for diploma holders.
  • Engineering Degrees from Foreign Universities - recognized pathways for academic advancement.
  • Engineering Institution Examinations - professional qualification routes for practising engineers.

Additional progression options

  • Diploma holders with required experience can pursue Quantity Surveying as a specialised career route.
  • Management and Business Administration - including Business Administration (MBA) - are viable options for career diversification.
  • Law and other professional fields are also available where experience and interest align.

Core student outcomes

  • Understand and apply principles of structural analysis, hydraulics and soil mechanics to practical problems.
  • Develop field competence in surveying through a two-week residential Survey Camp and hands-on exercises.
  • Gain workplace experience and applied engineering skills during Industrial Training in Semesters 5 - 6.
  • Acquire practical laboratory and workshop skills supported by six laboratories and a qualified teaching panel.
  • Be prepared for further study or professional qualification routes - including B.Tech., engineering degrees and institution examinations.

Who this programme suits
