Bachelor of Education in Natural Sciences

The Department of Secondary & Tertiary Education of the Faculty of Education offers this Inter-Faculty programme of study, in collaboration with the Faculty of Natural Sciences. It is a four year programme of which the first two years (Levels 3 and 4) will be devoted to the teaching of Science subjects and the last two years (Levels 5 and 6) to Education subjects. It is a 144 credit programme in which candidates are required to acquire 36 credits at each of the levels.

To provide opportunities for further education for non-graduate Science teachers in the education system; To provide opportunities for higher education for those who are qualified to enter but do not get a place in a conventional university; To provide professional qualification for Science graduates who are willing to enter the teaching profession.

This programme includes continuous assessment, laboratory work , and fieldwork,teaching practice,project and final examination. A student,s progress is assessed continuously throughout the course by means of assignments and at the end of the course by means of a Final Examination.Performance at continuous assessment will be considered in deciding the eligibility to sit the Final Examination.

Admission

• Obtained a minimum of 3 passes at the General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) Examination in three Science subjects
• Passes in courses in equal to 54 credits at levels 1 and 2 from among the Foundation in Science offered by the Open University of Sri Lanka
