The Bachelor of Software Engineering Honours (BSEHons) is a UGC-approved undergraduate degree designed to produce graduate software engineers aligned with ACM/IEEE curriculum guidelines. The programme targets roles such as software architect, systems analyst and QA engineer.

Programme owner and delivery

The programme is conducted by the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Technology. Delivery uses a technology-supported distance model - an LMS, interactive learning sessions and weekend day-schools; final examinations are held on-site.

Programme length and credit framework

The BSEHons is structured as a specialised degree with a minimum duration of 4 years - students are permitted up to 12 years to complete the award. Course delivery moved to a two-semester model from the 2021/2022 academic year.

Entry requirements

• Three passes in the G.C.E. (A/L) examination in any stream - excluding General English and General Information Technology subjects.
• Or “C” passes in any three subjects in Cambridge/Edexcel Advanced Level Examination.
• Or completion of any Advanced Certificate Program offered by the OUSL - or any other qualification acceptable to the Senate.
• All applicants must also pass the Selection Test.

Professional recognition and partnerships

The programme is recognised by the University Grants Commission and by professional bodies such as IESL. Curriculum design and industry alignment are supported through collaboration with SLASSCOM, which contributes curriculum input, internships and scholarship opportunities.

The programme defines clear Programme Learning Outcomes (PLOs) that students should achieve by graduation - these cover technical, professional and research-related competencies. Key PLOs include the ability to:

Curriculum highlights and practical training

The curriculum emphasises core units in computer science, programming, software engineering, mathematics and quality assurance and testing. Students must complete a one-year full-time industrial training placement as an integral practical requirement.

Exemptions and progression

Students with prior formal qualifications may apply for course exemptions - the Faculty Guidebook lists accepted exemptions and outlines minimum credit requirements even after exemptions are granted. Exemption applications are evaluated by a departmental committee.

Workload and study expectations

Awards and exit qualification

Successful completion leads to the Bachelor of Software Engineering Honours degree. The OUSL flexible structure also allows eligible students to exit earlier with a recognised intermediate award such as a Higher Diploma, where requirements are met.
